Umar said to Saad, "The people have complained about you in everything, even in the prayer."Saad replied, "As for me, I prolong the first two units and shorten the last two, and I spare no effort in following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Umar said, "That is what I expected of you."
حدثنا حفص بن عمر حدثنا شعبة عن محمد بن عبيد الله أبي عون
قال عمر لسعد قد شكاك الناس في كل شيء حتى في الصلاة قال أما أنا فأمد في الأوليين وأحذف في الأخريين ولا آلو ما اقتديت به من صلاة رسول الله ﷺ قال ذاك الظن بك
Reported by Bukhari, in the Book of Adhan, in the chapter on lengthening the prayer in the first two units and shortening it in the last two, hadith no. 770, and Muslim, in the Book of Prayer, in the chapter on recitation in Dhuhr and Asr, hadith no. 453, from the hadith of Shubah, with this same wording.
