Malik bin Huwayrith used to come to this prayer place of ours. Once the prayer was about to begin, and we said to him, "Come forward and lead us in prayer."He replied, "Let one of your own men step forward and lead the prayer. I will tell you why I will not lead you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever visits a people should not lead them in prayer. Rather, one of them should lead the prayer.'"
[Hasan] Tirmidhi transmitted it, Prayer, chapter on what has been said about one who visits a people and should not lead them in prayer, no. 356, from the hadith of Aban with this wording, and he said, hasan sahih. Part of the hadith has a corroborating narration mentioned earlier at no. 91.
