Two men were arguing in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and one of them became so intensely angry that I imagined his nose was about to split apart from the severity of his rage.The Prophet ﷺ said, "I know a word which, if he were to say it, the anger he is feeling would leave him."Someone asked, "What is it, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "Let him say, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan.'"Muaz then began urging the man to say it, but he refused, persisted in his stubbornness, and only grew more enraged.
حدثنا يوسف بن موسى حدثنا جرير بن عبد الحميد عن عبد الملك بن عمير عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى
استب رجلان عند النبي ﷺ فغضب أحدهما غضبا شديدا حتى خيل إلي أن أنفه يتمزع من شدة غضبه فقال النبي ﷺ إني لأعلم كلمة لو قالها لذهب عنه ما يجده من الغضب فقال ما هي يا رسول الله قال يقول اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الشيطان الرجيم قال فجعل معاذ يأمره فأبى ومحك وجعل يزداد غضبا
Sahih. Tirmidhi reported it in Kitab al-Daawat, chapter "What One Says When Angry," no. 3452, from the hadith of Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, transmitted in the same manner, and he said, "This is a mursal hadith of Ibn Abu Layla, he did not hear it from Muaz bin Jabal." It has a corroborating witness with Nasai in Al-Kubra, no. 10223, and its chain is sahih.
