I had sheep at Uhud, and death struck them. I went to Maymuna, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and mentioned this to her.Maymuna said to me, "Why don't you take their skins and make use of them?"I asked, "Is that permissible?"She replied, "Yes. Some men from Quraysh once passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dragging a sheep of theirs as if it were a donkey. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, 'If only you had taken its hide.'They said, 'It is dead carrion.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Water and qaraz leaves will purify it.'"
[Its chain is hasan] Nasai reported it in the chapter on Al-Fara and Al-Atirah, section on what is used to tan the hides of dead animals, no. 4253, from the hadith of Abdullah bin Wahb, through this route, and Ibn Mulaqqin graded it hasan in Tuhfat al-Muhtaj, 1/220, 1, no. 131. The hadith has corroborating narrations.
