A small flock of sheep from the charity collection had gathered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Abu Dharr, take them out to graze in the desert."So I went out to Rabadhah. While I was there, I would become ritually impure and remain in that state for five or six days. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ.He said, "Abu Dharr."I remained silent.He said, "May your mother lose you, Abu Dharr. Woe to your mother."Then he called for a black servant girl, who brought a large bowl containing water. She screened me with a cloth, and I screened myself with my mount and performed the major ablution. It was as though a mountain had been lifted off me.He said, "Clean earth is sufficient for the Muslim's purification, even for ten years. But when you find water, let it touch your skin, for that is better."Musaddad said in his version, "A small flock from the charity."
حدثنا عمرو بن عون أخبرنا خالد الواسطي عن خالد الحذاء عن أبي قلابة ح حدثنا مسدد أخبرنا خالد يعني ابن عبد الله الواسطي عن خالد الحذاء عن أبي قلابة عن عمرو بن بجدان
اجتمعت غنيمة عند رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا أبا ذر ابد فيها فبدوت إلى الربذة فكانت تصيبني الجنابة فأمكث الخمس والست فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقال أبو ذر فسكت فقال ثكلتك أمك أبا ذر لأمك الويل فدعا لي بجارية سوداء فجاءت بعس فيه ماء فسترتني بثوب واستترت بالراحلة واغتسلت فكأني ألقيت عني جبلا فقال الصعيد الطيب وضوء المسلم ولو إلى عشر سنين فإذا وجدت الماء فأمسه جلدك فإن ذلك خير وقال مسدد غنيمة من الصدقة
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Purification, the chapter on what has been said about tayammum for one in a state of major impurity when he cannot find water, hadith no. 124, from the hadith of Khalid Haddan, with this chain, and he said, hasan sahih. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith no. 2292, as did Ibn Hibban, hadith nos. 1308 and 1309, and Hakim, 1/176–177, and Dhahabi concurred with him.Amr bin Bujdan is not unknown, rather the majority have affirmed his reliability, so his hadith does not fall below the rank of hasan.
