I asked the Prophet ﷺ about hunting with a featherless arrow.He said, "If it strikes with its sharp edge, then eat. But if it strikes with its broadside, do not eat, for that counts as something killed by a blow."I said, "I send my dog after game."He said, "If you have mentioned Allah's name, then eat. Otherwise, do not eat. And if the dog has eaten from the prey, do not eat, for it has caught it for itself."I then said, "I send my dog and later find another dog with it."He said, "Do not eat, because you mentioned Allah's name only over your own dog."
حدثنا محمد بن كثير حدثنا شعبة عن عبد الله بن أبي السفر عن الشعبي قال
سألت النبي ﷺ عن المعراض فقال إذا أصاب بحده فكل وإذا أصاب بعرضه فلا تأكل فإنه وقيذ قلت أرسل كلبي قال إذا سميت فكل وإلا فلا تأكل وإن أكل منه فلا تأكل فإنما أمسك لنفسه فقال أرسل كلبي فأجد عليه كلبا آخر فقال لا تأكل لأنك إنما سميت على كلبك
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Wudu, in the chapter on water used to wash human hair, hadith no. 175, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hunting and Slaughtered Animals, etc., in the chapter on hunting with trained dogs and shooting, hadith no. 3/1929, from the hadith of Shubah, through this chain.
