Abu Hurairah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a cavalry unit toward Najd, and they returned with a man from Banu Hanifa named Thumama bin Uthal, the chief of the people of Yamama. They tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to him and asked, "What do you have to say, Thumama?"Thumama replied, "I have good to offer, Muhammad. If you kill me, you kill someone whose blood will be avenged. If you show favor, you show favor to one who will be grateful. And if you want wealth, ask, and you will be given whatever you wish of it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left him until the next day, then said to him, "What do you have to say, Thumama?"Thumama repeated the same words. The Prophet left him until the day after, then asked him again, and Thumama said the same thing.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Release Thumama."Thumama went to a grove of palm trees near the mosque, performed a full bath there, then entered the mosque and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."And he continued the hadith.Isa said, Layth informed us, and he said "one whose blood will be avenged."

حدثنا عيسى بن حماد المصري وقتيبة قال قتيبة حدثنا الليث بن سعد عن سعيد بن أبي سعيد أنه سمع

أبا هريرة يقول

بعث رسول الله ﷺ خيلا قبل نجد فجاءت برجل من بني حنيفة يقال له ثمامة بن أثال سيد أهل اليمامة فربطوه بسارية من سواري المسجد فخرج إليه رسول الله ﷺ فقال ماذا عندك يا ثمامة قال عندي يا محمد خير إن تقتل تقتل ذا دم وإن تنعم تنعم على شاكر وإن كنت تريد المال فسل تعط منه ما شئت فتركه رسول الله ﷺ حتى إذا كان الغد ثم قال له ما عندك يا ثمامة فأعاد مثل هذا الكلام فتركه حتى كان بعد الغد فذكر مثل هذا فقال رسول الله ﷺ أطلقوا ثمامة فانطلق إلى نخل قريب من المسجد فاغتسل فيه ثم دخل المسجد فقال أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله وساق الحديث قال عيسى أخبرنا الليث وقال ذا ذم
