Abu Dawud is Yahya bin Abbad. My father, who nursed me, told me, and he was one of the Bani Mura bin Awf and was present in that expedition, the expedition of Mutah. He said, "By Allah, it is as if I am looking at Jafar right now as he leapt down from his chestnut horse, hamstrung it, then fought the enemy until he was killed."
[Its chain is daif] Ibn Hisham reported it in his Sirah, 20/4, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, through a man from Banu Murrah bin Awf whom Abbad bin Abdullah bin Zubayr named as his foster father. I could not find him graded as reliable, so he is the flaw in the report. But if it were established that he was a companion, the chain would be hasan.
