The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wait for the late night prayer until their heads would nod with drowsiness, then they would pray without renewing their ablution.
حدثنا شاذ بن فياض حدثنا هشام الدستوائي عن قتادة
كان أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ ينتظرون العشاء الآخرة حتى تخفق رءوسهم ثم يصلون ولا يتوضئون
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Menstruation, in the chapter "Evidence That the Sleep of One Sitting Does Not Invalidate wudu," hadith no. 376/125, from the hadith of Qatada through this same chain, and Daraqutni graded it sahih, 1/131.
