We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa. A man killed the wife of one of the polytheists, and that man swore that he would not rest until he had shed blood among the companions of Muhammad. He set out following the trail of the Prophet ﷺ.The Prophet ﷺ stopped at a place to camp and asked, "Who will keep watch over us tonight?"A man from the Muhajirun and a man from the Ansar volunteered. He said, "Station yourselves at the entrance of the mountain pass."When the two men went out to the entrance of the pass, the Muhajiri lay down to rest while the Ansari stood up to pray. The man came, and when he saw the figure of the Ansari, he recognized that he was a sentinel of the people, so he shot him with an arrow that struck him. The Ansari pulled it out and continued praying. The man shot him with a second arrow, and then a third. Then the Ansari bowed and prostrated. After that he woke his companion. When the attacker realized that they had become aware of him, he fled. When the Muhajiri saw the blood pouring from the Ansari, he exclaimed, "Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me when he first shot you?"He replied, "I was in the middle of a surah I was reciting, and I did not want to cut it short."
[Its isnad is hasan] Ahmad reported it, 3/343, from the hadith of Ibn Mubarak, with the same wording. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 36, as did Ibn Hibban (Mawarid), no. 1093, and Hakim, 1/156, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Bukhari mentioned it without a full chain, 1/280 (Fath al-Bari).
