With this hadith, he said, "If religion were based on personal opinion, the underside of the feet would be more deserving of being wiped than the top, yet the Prophet ﷺ wiped over the top of his leather socks."Waki narrated it from Amash with his chain of transmission, saying, "I used to think that the underside of the feet was more deserving of being wiped than the top, until I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiping over the top of them." Waki said, meaning the leather socks.Isa bin Yunus also narrated it from Amash in the same way that Waki narrated it.Abu al-Sawda narrated it from Ibn Abd Khayr, from his father, who said, "I saw Ali perform ablution and wash the top of his feet, and he said, 'Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing this...'" and he continued the hadith.

بهذا الحديث قال لو كان الدين بالرأي لكان باطن القدمين أحق بالمسح من ظاهرهما وقد مسح النبي ﷺ على ظهر خفيه ورواه وكيع عن الأعمش بإسناده قال كنت أرى أن باطن القدمين أحق بالمسح من ظاهرهما حتى رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يمسح على ظاهرهما قال وكيع يعني الخفين ورواه عيسى بن يونس عن الأعمش كما رواه وكيع ورواه أبو السوداء عن ابن عبد خير عن أبيه قال رأيت عليا توضأ فغسل ظاهر قدميه وقال لولا أني رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يفعله وساق الحديث
