With this chain of narration, he reported the same hadith and said, "I used to think that the soles of the feet were more deserving of being washed, until I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiping over the upper surface of his leather socks."

بإسناده بهذا الحديث قال ما كنت أرى باطن القدمين إلا أحق بالغسل حتى رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يمسح على ظهر خفيه
[Its isnad is daif. Bayhaqi narrated it, 1/292, from the hadith of Abu Dawud through the same route. The hadith has other paths in Humaydi, no. 47 (in my edition), and in Ahmad, 1/148, and elsewhere.Abu Ishaq narrated using "an" without specifying direct hearing.
