The Prophet ﷺ sent Umar bin Khattab to collect the zakat. Ibn Jamil, Khalid bin Walid, and Abbas refused to pay.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ibn Jamil has no cause for resentment except that he was once poor and Allah made him rich. As for Khalid bin Walid, you are being unjust to him, for he has set aside his coats of mail and his weapons for the cause of Allah. As for Abbas, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his zakat is upon me, along with the same amount again."Then he said, "Do you not realize that a man's paternal uncle is like his father?"
حدثنا الحسن بن الصباح حدثنا شبابة عن ورقاء عن أبي الزناد عن الأعرج
بعث النبي ﷺ عمر بن الخطاب على الصدقة فمنع ابن جميل وخالد بن الوليد والعباس فقال رسول الله ﷺ ما ينقم ابن جميل إلا أن كان فقيرا فأغناه الله وأما خالد بن الوليد فإنكم تظلمون خالدا فقد احتبس أدراعه وأعتده في سبيل الله وأما العباس عم رسول الله ﷺ فهي علي ومثلها ثم قال أما شعرت أن عم الرجل صنو الأب أو صنو أبيه
Sourcing, reported by Muslim, Zakat, chapter on advancing zakat and withholding it, no. 983, from the hadith of Warqa. And Bukhari, Zakat, chapter on the saying of Allah Almighty, "and for freeing captives, and for those in debt, and for the cause of Allah" [Tawbah 9:60], no. 1468, from the hadith of Abu Zinad, with the same wording. Tirmidhi also related it, no. 3761, from the hadith of Shababa, with the same wording.
