The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Witr is a duty upon every Muslim. Whoever wishes to pray witr with five rakahs may do so, whoever wishes to pray witr with three may do so, and whoever wishes to pray witr with one may do so."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن المبارك حدثني قريش بن حيان العجلي حدثنا بكر بن وائل عن الزهري عن عطاء بن يزيد الليثي
قال رسول الله ﷺ الوتر حق على كل مسلم فمن أحب أن يوتر بخمس فليفعل ومن أحب أن يوتر بثلاث فليفعل ومن أحب أن يوتر بواحدة فليفعل
[Its isnad is sahih] Nasai narrated it in Qiyam al-Layl, chapter on the mention of the disagreement over Zuhri regarding the hadith of Abu Ayub on Witr, no. 1712, and Ibn Majah, no. 1190, from the hadith of Zuhri through the same route, and he explicitly stated the direct hearing. Hakim graded it sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs (1/302), and Dhahabi agreed with him.
