A man came to Ibn Masud and said, "I recite the Mufassal section in a single rakah."Ibn Masud replied, "Is this like the hurried recitation of poetry, scattered like poor-quality dates? Rather, the Prophet ﷺ used to recite paired surahs together in one rakah. He would recite an-Najm and ar-Rahman in one rakah, Iqtarabat and al-Haqqah in one rakah, at-Tur and adh-Dhariyat in one rakah, Idha Waqaat and Nun in one rakah, Saala Sail and an-Naziat in one rakah, Wayl lil-Mutaffifin and Abasa in one rakah, al-Muddaththir and al-Muzzammil in one rakah, Hal Ata and La Uqsimu bi-Yawm al-Qiyamah in one rakah, Amma Yatasaalun and al-Mursalat in one rakah, and ad-Dukhan and Idha ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat in one rakah."

أتى ابن مسعود رجل فقال إني أقرأ المفصل في ركعة فقال أهذا كهذ الشعر ونثرا كنثر الدقل لكن النبي ﷺ كان يقرأ النظائر السورتين في ركعة النجم والرحمن في ركعة واقتربت والحاقة في ركعة والطور والذاريات في ركعة وإذا وقعت ونون في ركعة وسأل سائل والنازعات في ركعة وويل للمطففين وعبس في ركعة والمدثر والمزمل في ركعة وهل أتى ولا أقسم بيوم القيامة في ركعة وعم يتساءلون والمرسلات في ركعة والدخان وإذا الشمس كورت في ركعة
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Ahmad narrated it, 1/418, from the hadith of Abu Ishaq with the same wording. He conceals weaknesses in his chains and narrated this using the ambiguous form "an," but the hadith of Bukhari, no. 4993, and Muslim, no. 822, and others make it unnecessary.
