The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying two units of prayer after the dawn prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The dawn prayer is two units."The man replied, "I had not prayed the two units that come before it, so I prayed them now."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent.
[Hasan] Tirmidhi transmitted it in Salah, chapter on one who misses the two rakahs before Fajr, etc., no. 422, and Ibn Majah, no. 1154, from the hadith of Saad bin Saeed, and its chain is daif due to a break in it. The hadith has many corroborating narrations with Ibn Khuzayma, no. 1116, Ibn Hibban, no. 624, and Hakim, 1/274, 275, and others, and the general body of sahih hadiths supports it, and nothing contradicting it has been established as reliable.
