The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever washes him must perform ghusl, and whoever carries him must perform wudu," meaning the deceased.

Sourcing, [Sahih] Ibn Majah also narrated it, in the Book of Funerals, chapter on what has been said about washing the deceased, hadith 1463, from Abu Dawud, Muhammad bin Abdul-Malik, with the same wording, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan) 1158. It has many corroborating narrations, including hadith 3162, and Bayhaqi and others also narrated it.On this subject there are also narrations from Ali [Ibn Majah, hadith 1462] and Ayesha [Abu Dawud, hadith 3160].
