The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me when I was sick and asked, "Have you made a will?"I replied, "Yes."He asked, "For how much?"I said, "All my wealth, given in the path of Allah."He said, "Then what have you left for your children?"I answered, "They are well off and provided for."He said, "Bequeath one tenth."I kept negotiating with him until he said, "Bequeath one third, and one third is plenty."Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "We prefer that one bequeath less than a third, because of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ saying, 'And one third is plenty.'"

عادني رسول الله ﷺ وأنا مريض فقال أوصيت قلت نعم قال بكم قلت بمالي كله في سبيل الله قال فما تركت لولدك قلت هم أغنياء بخير قال أوص بالعشر فما زلت أناقصه حتى قال أوص بالثلث والثلث كثير قال أبو عبد الرحمن ونحن نستحب أن ينقص من الثلث لقول رسول الله ﷺ والثلث كثير
Sahih. Nasai also reported it (6/243, no. 3661) (Bequests, chapter on bequeathing a third) through the narration of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed with this chain. Zaida bin Qudama, Abu Ahwas, Khalid bin Abdullah, and others also narrated it from Ataa with this chain, and he narrated it before his memory became confused.
