The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit her and called for a drink. He drank, then handed it to her, and she drank as well. She said, "Messenger of Allah, I was fasting."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "The one observing a voluntary fast is in charge of himself. If he wishes, he may continue fasting, and if he wishes, he may break it."Shuba said, I asked him, "Did you hear this directly from Umm Hani?"He answered, "No, Abu Salih and our family informed me of it from Umm Hani."Hammad bin Salama narrated this hadith from Simak bin Harb, but he reported it through Harun, the son of Umm Hani's daughter, from Umm Hani. Shuba's version is more accurate.This is how Mahmud bin Ghaylan narrated it to us from Abu Dawud, with the wording "in charge of himself" (amin nafsih). Others besides Mahmud narrated it to us from Abu Dawud with the wording "master of himself" (amir nafsih) or "in charge of himself" (amin nafsih), with uncertainty between the two. It has likewise been reported through more than one route from Shuba as either "in charge" or "master of himself," with the same uncertainty.He said, the chain of Umm Hani's hadith contains some weakness. Some scholars among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others act upon it, holding that when a person observing a voluntary fast breaks his fast, he is not required to make it up unless he wishes to do so. This is the view of Sufyan Thawri, Ahmad, Ishaq, and Shafii.

أن رسول الله ﷺ دخل عليها فدعى بشراب فشرب ثم ناولها فشربت فقالت يا رسول الله أما إني كنت صائمة فقال رسول الله ﷺ الصائم المتطوع أمين نفسه إن شاء صام وإن شاء أفطر قال شعبة فقلت له أأنت سمعت هذا من أم هانئ قال لا أخبرني أبو صالح وأهلنا عن أم هانئ وروى حماد بن سلمة هذا الحديث عن سماك بن حرب فقال عن هارون بن بنت أم هانئ عن أم هانئ ورواية شعبة أحسن هكذا حدثنا محمود بن غيلان عن أبي داود فقال أمين نفسه و حدثنا غير محمود عن أبي داود فقال أمير نفسه أو أمين نفسه على الشك وهكذا روي من غير وجه عن شعبة أمين أو أمير نفسه على الشك قال وحديث أم هانئ في إسناده مقال والعمل عليه عند بعض أهل العلم من أصحاب النبي ﷺ وغيرهم أن الصائم المتطوع إذا أفطر فلا قضاء عليه إلا أن يحب أن يقضيه وهو قول سفيان الثوري وأحمد وإسحق والشافعي
