The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates." Ibn Uyayna added, "for they are a blessing. And whoever does not find any, let him break his fast with water, for it is purifying."
حدثنا محمود بن غيلان حدثنا وكيع حدثنا سفيان عن عاصم الأحول ح و حدثنا هناد حدثنا أبو معاوية عن عاصم الأحول و حدثنا قتيبة قال أنبأنا سفيان بن عيينة عن عاصم الأحول عن حفصة بنت سيرين عن الرباب
عن النبي ﷺ قال إذا أفطر أحدكم فليفطر على تمر زاد ابن عيينة فإنه بركة فمن لم يجد فليفطر على ماء فإنه طهور
[Sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapters on fasting, chapter on what one should break the fast with, hadith: 2355, and Ibn Majah, hadith: 1699, from the hadith of Asim al-Ahwal with this same wording. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith: 2067, as did Ibn Hibban, hadith: 892, and Abu Hatim, and Hakim, 1/431, 432, and Dhahabi and others.
