The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Begging is a humiliation by which a man scars his own face, except when a man asks a ruler, or asks out of a need from which there is no escape."
[Sahih] Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter, "How much may a single man be given from zakat?" hadith 1639, and Nasai, 5/100, hadith 2600, from the hadith of Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, through this route, and he explicitly stated hearing it directly in the version of Ahmad (23/5, 20529). Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan), 3377.
