He came to our gathering and reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "When you estimate the produce, take it and leave a third. If you do not leave a third, then leave a fourth."
[Its isnad is hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter on estimating the crop yield, hadith 1605, from the hadith of Shuba through this route. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (hadith 2319, 2320), as did Ibn Hibban in al-Ihsan (3269). Hakim (409/1) said it meets the criterion of Bukhari, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith is also found in Musnad Abu Dawud Tayalisi (hadith 1234).On this topic there are also narrations from Ayesha [Abu Dawud, hadith 1606], Itaab bin Usayd [coming up, 644], and Ibn Abbas [Abu Dawud, hadith 3410, and Ibn Majah, hadith 1820].
