The witr prayer is not obligatory like the prescribed prayers, but rather it is a sunnah which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established.Muhammad bin Bashshar narrated this to us, saying, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq.This is more authentic than the hadith of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash. Mansur bin al-Mutamir also reported it from Abu Ishaq in a manner similar to the narration of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash.
وروى سفيان الثوري وغيره عن أبي إسحق عن عاصم بن ضمرة
الوتر ليس بحتم كهيئة الصلاة المكتوبة ولكن سنة سنها رسول الله ﷺ حدثنا بذلك محمد بن بشار حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي عن سفيان عن أبي إسحق وهذا أصح من حديث أبي بكر بن عياش وقد رواه منصور بن المعتمر عن أبي إسحق نحو رواية أبي بكر بن عياش
[Hasan] Nasai also recorded it, 3/229, no. 1677 (Qiyam al-Layl, chapter on the command to perform Witr), from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, through this route. The hadith has supporting narrations, including the previous hadith, no. 453.
