The Prophet ﷺ used to pray nine rakahs during the night.
حدثنا هناد حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن الأسود بن يزيد
كان النبي ﷺ يصلي من الليل تسع ركعات
[Sahih]. Ibn Majah also narrated it, in "Establishing the Prayers," chapter on what has been said about how many units one should pray at night, h: 1360, and Nasai, 3/263, h: 1726, from Hannad with the same wording, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan), 2606. It has corroborating narrations in Muslim (h: 730, "Prayer of the Traveler," chapter 16) and elsewhere. On this subject there are also narrations from Abu Hurairah [Muslim, h: 768], Zayd bin Khalid [Muslim, h: 765, and Tirmidhi in Shamail, h: 268], and Fadl bin Abbas [previously mentioned, 385].
