The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family. When your companion dies, leave him be."
Sahih. Darimi also narrated it, no. 2265, from Muhammad bin Yusuf, with the same wording, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1312. Waki narrated it from Hisham with the same wording (Abu Dawud, no. 4899, in abridged form). The hadith has supporting narrations. His saying, "leave him," means do not mention him except with good, as Ibn Hibban stated.
