The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out an army and placed Ali bin Abu Talib in command. While leading the expedition, Ali took a slave-girl for himself, and the men disapproved of what he had done. Four of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a pact among themselves, saying, "When we meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we will inform him of what Ali has done."It was the custom of the Muslims, when they returned from a journey, to go first to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to greet him before heading back to their own dwellings. So when the expedition arrived, they greeted the Prophet ﷺ, and one of the four men stood up and said, "Messenger of Allah, have you not seen what Ali bin Abu Talib has done? He did such and such."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him. Then the second man stood and said the same thing, and he turned away from him as well. Then the third stood and said the same thing, and he turned away from him too. Then the fourth stood and said what the others had said.At this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned toward them with anger visible on his face and said, "What do you want from Ali? What do you want from Ali? What do you want from Ali? Ali is from me, and I am from him, and he is the guardian of every believer after me."
