On the day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Madinah, everything in it was lit up with brightness. On the day he died, everything in it was darkened. We had barely finished dusting off our hands from burying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we found our hearts had changed beyond recognition.
حدثنا بشر بن هلال الصواف البصري حدثنا جعفر بن سليمان الضبعي عن ثابت
لما كان اليوم الذي دخل فيه رسول الله ﷺ المدينة أضاء منها كل شيء فلما كان اليوم الذي مات فيه أظلم منها كل شيء ولما نفضنا عن رسول الله ﷺ الأيدي وإنا لفي دفنه حتى أنكرنا قلوبنا
Grading, its isnad is hasan. Ibn Majah narrated it in the book of Funerals, chapter on mentioning his death and burial, no. 1631, from Bishr bin Hilal with the same wording. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 2162, as did Hakim, who said it meets the standard of Muslim, 3/57, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
