When the verse "You who believe, when you consult the Messenger privately, offer something in charity before your private consultation" [Mujadilah 58:12] was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ said to me, "What do you think of a dinar?"I replied, "They cannot manage that."He said, "Then half a dinar?"I replied, "They cannot manage that either."He asked, "Then how much?"I said, "A barley-grain's weight."He said, "You are truly modest in your asking."Then the verse was revealed, "Were you afraid to offer charity before your private consultation?" [Mujadilah 58:13].He said, "Through me, Allah lightened the burden on this community."He said, this is a hasan gharib hadith. We know it only through this chain. The meaning of his statement "a barley-grain" is the weight of a barley-grain of gold. Abu al-Jad's name is Rafi.

لما نزلت {يا أيها الذين آمنوا إذا ناجيتم الرسول فقدموا بين يدي نجواكم صدقة} قال لي النبي ﷺ ما ترى دينارا قلت لا يطيقونه قال فنصف دينار قلت لا يطيقونه قال فكم قلت شعيرة قال إنك لزهيد قال فنزلت {أأشفقتم أن تقدموا بين يدي نجواكم صدقات} الآية قال فبي خفف الله عن هذه الأمة قال هذا حديث حسن غريب إنما نعرفه من هذا الوجه ومعنى قوله شعيرة يعني وزن شعيرة من ذهب وأبو الجعد اسمه رافع
Its chain of transmission is daif. Ibn Hibban narrated it from the hadith of Yahya bin Adam through this route and graded it sahih, no. 1764, 1765, 2208, but its chain is daif since Thawri narrated with an "an" formula without specifying direct hearing, and there is doubt about whether Ali bin Alqama actually heard from Ali. The hadith has a daif corroborating narration in Ahmad, 185/1, and Tabarani, 147/1, no. 331, and elsewhere.
