I was a man who had been given a craving for intimacy with women unlike anyone else. When Ramadan came, I declared my wife forbidden to me by zihar until Ramadan should end, fearing that if I were intimate with her one night I would continue and the day would overtake me while I was unable to pull away. One night, while she was serving me, something of her became uncovered before me, and I leapt upon her. When morning came, I went out to my people and told them what had happened. I said, "Come with me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that I may inform him of my situation."They said, "No, by Allah, we will not do it. We fear that Quran will be revealed concerning us, or that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will say something about us whose disgrace will remain upon us. But you go yourself and do as you see fit."So I set out and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said, "Was it you who did that?"I said, "It was I."He said, "Was it you who did that?"I said, "It was I."He said, "Was it you who did that?"I said, "It was I, and here I am. Carry out the ruling of Allah upon me, for I will bear it patiently."He said, "Free a slave."I struck the side of my neck with my hand and said, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I own nothing besides this neck of mine."He said, "Then fast two months."I said, "Messenger of Allah, did what befell me come about except through fasting?"He said, "Then feed sixty poor people."I said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, we spent this night of ours hungry, with no supper to eat."He said, "Go to the collector of charity of Banu Zurayq and tell him to hand it over to you. Then feed sixty poor people on your behalf with one wasq of it, and use the rest for yourself and your dependents."So I returned to my people and said, "I found among you narrowness and bad counsel, and I found with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ generosity and blessing. He has ordered your charity to be given to me, so hand it over." And they handed it over to me.
Its chain of transmission is daif. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Divorce, chapter on Zihar, no. 2213, and Ibn Majah, no. 2062, both from the hadith of Ibn Ishaq, transmitted in the same manner. Hakim graded it sahih according to the criteria of Muslim, 2/203, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith has daif corroborating narrations.
