The people of Makkah asked the Prophet ﷺ for a sign, and the moon split in Makkah twice. So the verse was revealed, "The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split..." up to His saying, "...passing magic" [Qamar 54:1–2]. He says it means fading away.
