Abu Talib fell ill, and the Quraysh came to visit him, and the Prophet ﷺ also came to see him. There was a single seat available beside Abu Talib, so Abu Jahl stood up to prevent the Prophet ﷺ from sitting there. They complained about him to Abu Talib.Abu Talib said, "Nephew, what do you want from your people?"He replied, "I want from them one word, by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them tribute."Abu Talib asked, "One word?"He said, "One word."He said, "Uncle, say, 'There is no god but Allah.'"They said, "One single god? We have not heard of this in the latest religion. This is nothing but a fabrication."So Allah revealed concerning them, "Sad. By the Quran containing reminder. But those who disbelieve are in pride and dissension," up to His saying, "We have not heard of this in the latest religion. This is nothing but a fabrication." [Sad 38:1–7]
حدثنا محمود بن غيلان وعبد بن حميد المعنى واحد قالا حدثنا أبو أحمد حدثنا سفيان عن الأعمش عن يحيى قال عبد هو ابن عباد عن سعيد بن جبير
مرض أبو طالب فجاءته قريش وجاءه النبي ﷺ وعند أبي طالب مجلس رجل فقام أبو جهل كي يمنعه وشكوه إلى أبي طالب فقال يا ابن أخي ما تريد من قومك قال إني أريد منهم كلمة واحدة تدين لهم بها العرب وتؤدي إليهم العجم الجزية قال كلمة واحدة قال كلمة واحدة قال يا عم قولوا لا إله إلا الله فقالوا إلها واحدا ما سمعنا بهذا في الملة الآخرة إن هذا إلا اختلاق قال فنزل فيهم القرآن {ص والقرآن ذي الذكر بل الذين كفروا في عزة وشقاق} إلى قوله {ما سمعنا بهذا في الملة الآخرة إن هذا إلا اختلاق}
Its isnad is daif. Nasai narrated it in al-Kubra, no. 11436, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri through the same route, where he stated clearly that he heard it directly, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan, 6651), as did Hakim (2/432), and Dhahabi agreed with him. Amash narrated it with an ambiguous form of transmission.
