The Prophet ﷺ reported that Musa was a modest man who kept himself well covered, so much so that no part of his skin could be seen out of his bashfulness. Some of the Children of Israil caused him offense by saying, "He only conceals himself this much because of some defect in his skin, either leprosy, a hernia, or some other affliction." Allah
willed to clear him of what they had said.One day, Musa
went off alone, placed his clothes on a stone, and bathed. When he finished, he came toward his clothes to take them, but the stone ran off with his garment. Musa took his staff and chased after the stone, calling out, "My clothes, stone! My clothes, stone!" until he reached a gathering of the Children of Israil. They saw him naked, the most beautifully formed of men, and Allah cleared him of what they had been saying.Then the stone stopped, and Musa took his garment and put it on. He began striking the stone with his staff. By Allah, there are still marks on that stone from the blows of his staff, three, four, or five of them.This is the meaning of His saying, "Believers, do not be like those who insulted Musa, but Allah cleared him of what they said, and he was honorable in the sight of Allah" [Ahzab 33:69].
حدثنا عبد بن حميد حدثنا روح بن عبادة عن عوف عن الحسن ومحمد وخلاس
عن النبي ﷺ أن موسى عليه السلام كان رجلا حييا ستيرا ما يرى من جلده شيء استحياء منه فآذاه من آذاه من بني إسرائيل فقالوا ما يستتر هذا التستر إلا من عيب بجلده إما برص وإما أدرة وإما آفة وإن الله عز وجل أراد أن يبرئه مما قالوا وإن موسى عليه السلام خلا يوما وحده فوضع ثيابه على حجر ثم اغتسل فلما فرغ أقبل إلى ثيابه ليأخذها وإن الحجر عدا بثوبه فأخذ موسى عصاه فطلب الحجر فجعل يقول ثوبي حجر ثوبي حجر حتى انتهى إلى ملإ من بني إسرائيل فرأوه عريانا أحسن الناس خلقا وأبرأه مما كانوا يقولون قال وقام الحجر فأخذ ثوبه ولبسه وطفق بالحجر ضربا بعصاه فوالله إن بالحجر لندبا من أثر عصاه ثلاثا أو أربعا أو خمسا فذلك قوله تعالى {يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تكونوا كالذين آذوا موسى فبرأه الله مما قالوا وكان عند الله وجيها}
Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of the Prophets, Chapter 28, no. 3404, from the hadith of Rawh, with the same wording. Muslim narrated it, no. 339, from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, with the same wording. There is also a version from Anas [Bazzar (Kashf Astar): 3/66-67, no. 2252].
