The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr regarding his wager over "Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated" [Rum 30:1–2], "Why did you not take precaution, Abu Bakr? For 'a few years' is anywhere from three to nine."

أن رسول الله ﷺ قال لأبي بكر في مناحبة {الم غلبت الروم} ألا احتطت يا أبا بكر فإن البضع ما بين ثلاث إلى تسع
[Hasan] Abu Naeem also narrated it in Akhbar Isbahan (2/324) from Muhammad bin Muthanna through the same route. Tahawi related it in Mushkil Athar (4/126) from the hadith of Muhammad bin Khalid bin Uthma, and Maen bin Isa followed him in narrating it. It has a hasan corroborating narration with Tahawi (4/125).
