I came to the Prophet ﷺ with a golden cross hanging around my neck. He said, "Adi, throw away this idol from yourself."Then I heard him reciting from Surat Baraah, "They took their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah" [Tawbah 9:31].He said, "They did not actually worship them, but whenever they made something lawful for them, they accepted it as lawful, and whenever they made something unlawful for them, they accepted it as unlawful."
[Its chain of transmission is daif]. Tabarani narrated it in 17/92, no. 218, 219, from the hadith of Abdul-Salam, through the same route. Ghutayf is daif (Taqrib). It has a daif corroborating report, transmitted as a saying of a companion, found in Tabari's Tafsir.
