When the verse "those who believed and did not mix their faith with wrongdoing" [Anam 6:82] was revealed, it weighed heavily on the Muslims, and they said, "Messenger of Allah, which of us does not wrong himself?"He replied, "That is not what is meant. It refers only to associating partners with Allah. Have you not heard what Luqman said to his son, 'My son, do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating partners with Him is a tremendous wrong' [Luqman 31:13]?"
حدثنا علي بن خشرم أخبرنا عيسى بن يونس عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن علقمة
لما نزلت {الذين آمنوا ولم يلبسوا إيمانهم بظلم} شق ذلك على المسلمين فقالوا يا رسول الله وأينا لا يظلم نفسه قال ليس ذلك إنما هو الشرك ألم تسمعوا ما قال لقمان لابنه {يا بني لا تشرك بالله إن الشرك لظلم عظيم}
Graded as agreed upon [muttafaq alayh]. Muslim also narrated it in the Book of Faith, Chapter on the Sincerity and Purity of Faith, hadith no. 124, from Ali bin Khashram, and Bukhari, hadith no. 3429, from the hadith of Isa bin Yunus, with the same wording.
