When the verse was revealed, "And due to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House for whoever is able to find a way to it" [Al Imran 3:97], they asked, "Messenger of Allah, is it every year?" He remained silent.They asked again, "Messenger of Allah, is it every year?"He replied, "No, and had I said yes, it would have become obligatory."So Allah revealed, "O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if shown to you, would distress you" [Maidah 5:101].
حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج حدثنا منصور بن وردان عن علي بن عبد الأعلى عن أبيه عن أبي البختري
لما نزلت {ولله على الناس حج البيت من استطاع إليه سبيلا} قالوا يا رسول الله في كل عام فسكت قالوا يا رسول الله في كل عام قال لا ولو قلت نعم لوجبت فأنزل الله {يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تسألوا عن أشياء إن تبد لكم تسؤكم}
[Its chain is daif]. Previously mentioned at no. 814. Ibn Majah also narrated it in the Book of Rituals of Hajj, chapter on the obligation of Hajj, through the hadith of Mansur, with the same wording. The hadith has supporting narrations in Muslim, no. 1337, and elsewhere, without mentioning the verses, no. 2884. On this topic there are also narrations from Abu Hurairah and Ibn Abbas [see no. 814].
