We captured women on the day of Awtas who had husbands among their own people. The companions mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and then this verse was revealed, "And forbidden to you are married women, except those whom your right hands possess" [Nisa 4:24].
حدثنا أحمد بن منيع حدثنا هشيم أخبرنا عثمان البتي عن أبي الخليل
أصبنا سبايا يوم أوطاس لهن أزواج في قومهن فذكروا ذلك لرسول الله ﷺ فنزلت {والمحصنات من النساء إلا ما ملكت أيمانكم}
[Sahih] Muslim also narrated it, no. 35/1456, from the hadith of Abu Khalil through the same route. See the previous hadith. Thawri's narration is found in Ahmad, 3/72, and in Nasai's Kubra, no. 5491, and Shubah and others followed him in narrating it.
