The Prophet ﷺ had his front tooth broken on the day of Uhud and his face was wounded with a gash on his forehead, until the blood flowed down his face. He said, "How can a people prosper who have done this to their prophet while he calls them to Allah?" Then this verse was revealed, "Not for you is the decision, whether He turns to them in mercy or punishes them" [Aal Imran 3:128], to the end of the verse.
حدثنا أحمد بن منيع حدثنا هشيم أخبرنا حميد
أن النبي ﷺ كسرت رباعيته يوم أحد وشج وجهه شجة في جبهته حتى سال الدم على وجهه فقال كيف يفلح قوم فعلوا هذا بنبيهم وهو يدعوهم إلى الله فنزلت {ليس لك من الأمر شيء أو يتوب عليهم أو يعذبهم} إلى آخرها
Sourcing, this is sahih. Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir, 4/58, from Abu Saaib with the same wording, though in his version it has "Ahmad Sufyan" instead of "Ahmad bin Bashir." Ahmad narrated it, 2/93, from the hadith of Umar bin Hamza with the same wording, in abridged form.
