The Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca during the Umrah of Fulfillment with Abdullah bin Rawaha walking before him, reciting,"Clear the way, sons of disbelievers, for his path. Today we strike you over its revelation, a blow that severs heads from their resting place and makes a close friend forget his closest friend."Umar said to him, "Ibn Rawaha, in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and in the sanctuary of Allah you recite poetry?"The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave him be, Umar. These words strike them faster than a shower of arrows."
حدثنا إسحق بن منصور أخبرنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا جعفر بن سليمان حدثنا ثابت
أن النبي ﷺ دخل مكة في عمرة القضاء وعبد الله بن رواحة بين يديه يمشي وهو يقول خلوا بني الكفار عن سبيله اليوم نضربكم على تنزيله ضربا يزيل الهام عن مقيله ويذهل الخليل عن خليله فقال له عمر يا ابن رواحة بين يدي رسول الله ﷺ وفي حرم الله تقول الشعر فقال له النبي ﷺ خل عنه يا عمر فلهي أسرع فيهم من نضح النبل
[Its chain is hasan] Nasai narrated it: 15/202, no. 2876, Rites of Hajj, chapter on reciting poetry in the Haram and walking in front of the imam, from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, with the same wording. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 2020, and Baghawi graded it hasan in Sharh al-Sunnah: 12/375, no. 3404. It has another route in Ibn Hibban, no. 2021, and elsewhere, and its chain is hasan.Regarding his statement, "because Abdullah bin Rawaha was killed on the day of Muta," and so on, Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Bari: 7/382, "This is a serious lapse of memory and a rejected error. I do not know how Tirmidhi fell into this, given his extensive knowledge..." and so on.
