The Prophet ﷺ said, "There are four traits whoever possesses them is a hypocrite, and whoever possesses one of them has in him a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it. When he speaks, he lies. When he makes a promise, he breaks it. When he disputes, he behaves wickedly. And when he makes a covenant, he betrays it."He said, this is a hasan sahih hadith.Hasan bin Ali al-Khallal narrated to us, Abdullah bin Numayr narrated to us from Amash, from Abdullah bin Mura, with this chain of transmission, something similar.
حدثنا محمود بن غيلان حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى عن سفيان عن الأعمش عن عبد الله بن مرة عن مسروق
عن النبي ﷺ قال أربع من كن فيه كان منافقا وإن كانت خصلة منهن فيه كانت فيه خصلة من النفاق حتى يدعها من إذا حدث كذب وإذا وعد أخلف وإذا خاصم فجر وإذا عاهد غدر قال هذا حديث حسن صحيح حدثنا الحسن بن علي الخلال حدثنا عبد الله بن نمير عن الأعمش عن عبد الله بن مرة بهذا الإسناد نحوه
Agreed upon [by Bukhari and Muslim]. Bukhari also recorded it in the Book of Faith, chapter on the signs of the hypocrite, hadith no. 34, and Muslim, hadith no. 58, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, with the same wording.
