The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, 'Parts of me have consumed other parts.' So He granted it two breaths, one in winter and one in summer. Its breath in winter is the bitter cold, and its breath in summer is the scorching heat."
حدثنا محمد بن عمر بن الوليد الكندي الكوفي حدثنا المفضل بن صالح عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قال رسول الله ﷺ اشتكت النار إلى ربها وقالت أكل بعضي بعضا فجعل لها نفسين نفسا في الشتاء ونفسا في الصيف فأما نفسها في الشتاء فزمهرير وأما نفسها في الصيف فسموم
[Sahih]. Ibn Majah also narrated it in "Zuhd," chapter "The Description of the Fire," hadith 4319, from the hadith of Amash with the same wording. Asim bin Bahdala corroborated him, as found in Darimi, 2/340, hadith 2849, and others. Bukhari, hadith 537, and Muslim, hadith 617, also narrated it from the hadith of Abu Hurairah with the same wording.
