Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

I went out on a cold day from the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, having taken a worn-out hide. I made a hole in its middle and put it over my neck, then tied it around my waist with palm-leaf fibers. I was extremely hungry, and had there been any food in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have eaten from it.So I went out searching for something to eat, and I passed by a Jewish man tending his property, drawing water with his pulley. I peered at him through a gap in the wall.He said, "What's the matter, Arabi? Would you like a date for every bucket you draw?"I said, "Yes. Open the gate so I can come in."He opened it and I entered. He handed me his bucket, and every time I drew a bucket of water, he gave me a date, until my palm was full. Then I let go of his bucket and said, "That's enough for me." I ate the dates, then took a gulp of water and drank. Then I came to the mosque and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ there.

علي بن أبي طالب يقول

خرجت في يوم شات من بيت رسول الله ﷺ وقد أخذت إهابا معطوبا فحولت وسطه فأدخلته عنقي وشددت وسطي فحزمته بخوص النخل وإني لشديد الجوع ولو كان في بيت رسول الله ﷺ طعام لطعمت منه فخرجت ألتمس شيئا فمررت بيهودي في مال له وهو يسقي ببكرة له فاطلعت عليه من ثلمة في الحائط فقال ما لك يا أعرابي هل لك في كل دلو بتمرة قلت نعم فافتح الباب حتى أدخل ففتح فدخلت فأعطاني دلوه فكلما نزعت دلوا أعطاني تمرة حتى إذا امتلأت كفي أرسلت دلوه وقلت حسبي فأكلتها ثم جرعت من الماء فشربت ثم جئت المسجد فوجدت رسول الله ﷺ فيه
