The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every endeavor has a period of zeal, and every period of zeal is followed by a slackening. If the one going through it remains upright and moderate, then have hope for him. But if fingers are pointed at him in admiration, do not count him among the worthy."
[Hasan]. Tahawi related it in Mushkil Athar (2/89) through Muhammad bin Ajlan with this wording, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 652. Muhammad bin Ajlan narrated with "an", and the hadith has supporting narrations, including the one that follows. The hadith of Anas, Bayhaqi related it in Shuab al-Iman (5/366–367), no. 6977, and its chain is hasan, as I have established in a separate treatise. Munawi made a gross error concerning it, which some scholars then followed.
