I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No human being fills a vessel worse than his stomach. It is enough for a son of Adam to take a few mouthfuls to keep his back straight. But if he must eat more, then let it be a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third left for his breath."Hasan bin Arafah told us that Ismail bin Ayyash narrated something similar to them, and he said that Muqaddam bin Maadi Kareeb reported it from the Prophet ﷺ, without mentioning in it the words, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ."
[Sahih]. Nasai also related it in Sunan al-Kubra, no. 6769, from the hadith of Abu Salama Himsi, with the same wording. Ahmad related it in 4/132 from the hadith of Yahya bin Jabir, and he stated explicitly that he heard it directly. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1349, as did Dhahabi in Talkhis Mustadrak, 4/121. The hadith has supporting narrations in Ibn Hibban, no. 1348, and elsewhere.
