The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Son of Adam, giving away your surplus is better for you, and holding it back is worse for you, but you will not be blamed for keeping what is sufficient for your needs. Begin with those whom you support, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand."
حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا عمر بن يونس هو اليمامي حدثنا عكرمة بن عمار حدثنا شداد بن عبد الله قال سمعت
قال رسول الله ﷺ يا ابن آدم إنك إن تبذل الفضل خير لك وإن تمسكه شر لك ولا تلام على كفاف وابدأ بمن تعول واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى
Muslim also reported it, in the Book of Zakat, in the chapter titled "Explanation that the upper hand is better than the lower hand," etc., hadith no. 1036, from the hadith of Umar bin Yunus with the same chain.
