The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by us while we were repairing a hut of ours. He asked, "What is this?"We replied, "It has become weak, so we are fixing it."He said, "I see that the matter is more pressing than that."
حدثنا هناد حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن أبي السفر
مر علينا رسول الله ﷺ ونحن نعالج خصا لنا فقال ما هذا فقلنا قد وهى فنحن نصلحه قال ما أرى الأمر إلا أعجل من ذلك
[Sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Adab, chapter on building, no. 5236, from Hannad, from Amash, with an explicit mention of direct hearing, as recorded by Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad, where this is stated explicitly. Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih, no. 2555, 2556, no. 456.
