"My brother left a portion of his wealth to me as a bequest. Where do you think I should place it, among the poor, the needy, or those striving in the path of Allah?"Mujahid replied, "As for me, I would not prefer anyone over those striving in the path of Allah. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The one who frees a slave at the time of death is like the one who gives a gift only after he has eaten his fill.'"

إن أخي أوصى إلي بطائفة من ماله فأين ترى لي وضعه في الفقراء أو المساكين أو المجاهدين في سبيل الله فقال أما أنا فلو كنت لم أعدل بالمجاهدين سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول مثل الذي يعتق عند الموت كمثل الذي يهدي إذا شبع
Sourcing, hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Manumission, chapter on the merit of freeing a slave while in good health, hadith no. 3968, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, and Nasai, hadith no. 3644, from the hadith of Abu Ishaq with the same wording. Shubah narrated it from Abu Ishaq, who said he heard Abu Habibah narrate it with the same wording. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith no. 1219, as did Hakim, 22/213, and Dhahabi agreed.Abu Habibah, Ibn Hibban, Tirmidhi, Hakim, and others considered him reliable, and his hadith does not fall below the rank of hasan.
