"I find nothing in the Book that grants you a right, and I have not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ decree anything for you. But I will ask the people."So he asked the people, and Mughira bin Shuba testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had given her a sixth.Umar asked, "Who heard this along with you?"Muhammad bin Maslama replied, "I did."So Umar gave her the sixth.Then the other grandmother, who was contesting with her, came to Umar.Sufyan said, Muamar added something further to me from Zuhri, which I did not memorize directly from Zuhri but rather from Muamar, that Umar said, "If the two of you come together, the share is for both of you. And whichever of you is alone in the relationship, the share is hers."
حدثنا ابن أبي عمر حدثنا سفيان حدثنا الزهري قال مرة قال قبيصة وقال مرة رجل عن قبيصة بن ذؤيب قال جاءت الجدة أم الأم وأم الأب إلى أبي بكر فقالت إن ابن ابني أو ابن بنتي مات وقد أخبرت أن لي في كتاب الله حقا
ما أجد لك في الكتاب من حق وما سمعت رسول الله ﷺ قضى لك بشيء وسأسأل الناس قال فسأل الناس فشهد المغيرة بن شعبة أن رسول الله ﷺ أعطاها السدس قال ومن سمع ذلك معك قال محمد بن مسلمة قال فأعطاها السدس ثم جاءت الجدة الأخرى التي تخالفها إلى عمر قال سفيان وزادني فيه معمر عن الزهري ولم أحفظه عن الزهري ولكن حفظته من معمر أن عمر قال إن اجتمعتما فهو لكما وأيتكما انفردت به فهو لها

[Sahih] Narrated by Abu Dawud, Faraid, chapter on the grandmother, no. 2894, from the hadith of Qabisa through this chain. Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, no. 959, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 1234, and Hakim, 4/3381, who said it met the conditions of the two Shaykhs, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith has corroborating narrations.
