No trait was more hateful to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than lying. A man might tell a lie in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and it would remain on the Prophet's mind until he came to know that the man had repented from it.
حدثنا يحيى بن موسى حدثنا عبد الرزاق عن معمر عن أيوب عن ابن أبي مليكة
ما كان خلق أبغض إلى رسول الله ﷺ من الكذب ولقد كان الرجل يحدث عند النبي ﷺ بالكذبة فما يزال في نفسه حتى يعلم أنه قد أحدث منها توبة
[Hasan]. Ahmad narrated it, 6/152, from Abdul-Razzaq with the same wording, and it is found in his Musannaf, 11/158, hadith 20195. In both of them it is narrated from Ibn Abu Mulayka or someone else, so the chain is defective. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith 105, as did Haythami in Majma al-Zawaid, 1/142, and others. The hadith has a corroborating narration in Hakim, 4/98, who graded it sahih, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
