The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out on a military expedition. The men broke ranks and fled, so we came back to Madinah and hid ourselves there, saying, "We are doomed."Then we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, we are the runaways."He replied, "Rather, you are the ones who regroup and return to the fight, and I am your rallying force."
حدثنا ابن أبي عمر حدثنا سفيان عن يزيد بن أبي زياد عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى
بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ في سرية فحاص الناس حيصة فقدمنا المدينة فاختبينا بها وقلنا هلكنا ثم أتينا رسول الله ﷺ فقلنا يا رسول الله نحن الفرارون قال بل أنتم العكارون وأنا فئتكم
[Its chain is daif] Abu Dawud narrated it in jihad, chapter titled "Fleeing on the Day of Battle," no. 2647, from the hadith of Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, and he is daif and a mudallis, and he narrated it using an ambiguous form of transmission (an'ana).
